In heat pumps in which heat is taken from the air, icing of the evaporator very easily occurs and reduces the efficiency of the heat pump. To eliminate this icing, the heat pump is stopped, or an additional circuit is provided, while a medium is heated in the condenser, and this heated medium is passed through the evaporator, or the heat pump is reversed. All three measures lead to an interruption of the heating system and moreover also to heat being taken out of the heating circuit. According to the invention, it is proposed to provide in a heat pump a heat source, especially an infrared emitter, arranged upstream of the evaporator in the direction of flow of the air and directed towards the evaporator. The ice is thawed from the evaporator by the emitter. At the same time, however, the medium flowing through the evaporator also takes up a considerable portion of the heat radiated to the evaporator.
