The method relates to control of the tensile force during winding or unwinding of elongated material whose winding drum is moved by an electrical drive motor, the tensile force being influenced in the desired manner by means of a monitoring device. The drive voltage of the drive motor (AM1) is briefly reduced continuously during winding, or increased during unwinding, such that the tensile force on the elongated material becomes negligibly small. At the same time, the armature current (Jo) of the drive motor flowing in this condition is measured and stored as the basic value of the armature current and, on the basis of the measured basic value of the armature current (Jo), the armature current (Ja) actually flowing is increased during winding, or reduced during unwinding, such that the desired tensile stress is achieved. <IMAGE>
