Electrodes (14, 16) which are connected via high-voltage feeds (20, 22) to the secondary winding of a high-voltage transformer (24) protrude into a test vessel (10). The high-voltage feeds (20, 22) are surrounded by in each case one tubular, electrically conducting and earthed shield (26, 28) which extends to underneath the surface (12) of the dielectric fluid to be tested. This prevents ionisation phenomena such as corona formation and static discharges to the surface (12) or between the high-voltage feeds (20, 22) and a "boiling" of the surface. <IMAGE>
