The length of the train is made up from a number of sections (a1 to a5) which can be selected as desired and are bounded by marks (M1 to M6) located on the individual vehicles (A1, A2). Such marks can be for example the wheel sets of the vehicles. For each distance measurement (e.g. a1), the time interval (t1/2) of the actuation of a sensor (P1) on the track-side is determined by the bounding marks (M1, M2) and the period of time (z1) which the front mark (M1) requires to pass through a measuring section (@). The distance (a1) which is being sought can be derived from the required values. The entire length (L) of a train is made up of the sum of the individual distances (a1 to a5) and two supplements (a0, a6) for the overhang of the train at the tip of the train and at the end of the train. <IMAGE>
