The input terminals 18, 20 of a rectifier bridge 16 are located in series with a load 14 across an alternating-current input 10, 12. Between the output terminals 30, 32 of the rectifier bridge 16, a transistor or field-effect transistor 34 is located as controlled switch or controlled resistor. As a result, the alternating current flowing through the load 14 can be regulated in an undistorted manner or switched off without delay. A high-voltage insulating oil test instrument is one application for such a circuit. <IMAGE>
