PURPOSE:To improve the corrosion resistance of a magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer formed by a diagonal vapor deposition method and to prevent the deterioration of the electromagnetic transducing characteristics by changing the structure of the magnetic layer without forming other protective layer. CONSTITUTION:A Co-base magnetic layer made of Co or consisting of Co and Ni, Co and O, or Co, Ni and O is formed on a substrate. When the magnetic layer is divided into four equal parts in the thickness direction, the density of the part positioned farthest from the substrate is >=20% higher than the average density value of other three parts. Various laminar structures can provide said density profile to the magnetic layer. Usually it is preferable that the magnetic layer is formed by forming the 1st layer consisting of aggregated columnar crystals inclined to the normal line of the principal face of the substrate on the substrate and by forming the 2nd layer consisting of aggregated columnar crystals uninclined to the normal line of the principal face of the substrate on the 1st layer. |
