PURPOSE:To prepare beta-hydroxyisobutyric acid useful for the synthesis of optically active compounds, economically in an industrial scale, by contacting methacrylic acid or isobutyric acid with microorganisms belonging to Candida ohtakeensis or its cultured product, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective beta-hydroxyisobutyric acid is prepared e.g. by adding (A) methacrylic acid or isobutyric acid to (B) a culture liquid containing (i) microorganisms belonging to Candida ohtakeensis such as Candida ohtakeensis MR-1023 (FERM-P No.6818) and (ii) the cultured product of the microorganisms or the suspension of the microbial cells. EFFECT:Since a microbial strain having poor sensitivity of methacrylic acid, etc. is used, it can be charged in high concentration. |
