PURPOSE:To spread the range of speed change ratio so as to improve fuel consumption, power performance and quietness, by combining a 4-stage speed change device having four forward shifts and one reverse shift with an overdrive device. CONSTITUTION:This automatic speed changer for vehicle comprises an input shaft 3 provided in series to an output shaft 21 of a fluid coupling 2 and a counterdrive gear 31 coaxially located on an intermediate shaft 33, counterdriven gear 41 both parallelly provided to these shafts 3 and 33 and engaged with the counterdrive gear and the second shaft 4 mounting an output gear 42 engaged with an input gear 51 of a differential gear mechanism 5, 4-stage speed change device 6 provided on the input shaft and consisting of two sets of simple planetary gears 8, 9 and friction engaging elements C1, C2, C3, and an overdrive device 7 provided on the second shaft 4 in series relation to the 4-stage speed change device 6 and comprising one set of simple planetary gear 70 and friction engaging elements Bo, Co, Fo, and speed change stages of five forward shifts and one reverse shift can be obtained in the dimension of the axial direction approximate to that of a conventional automatic speed changer of 4-forward 1- reverse shift type. |
