Binding agent is polyethylene powder (I) which crosslinks under influence of heat of the press. (I) is mixed homogeneously with a peroxide or vinylsilane as crosslinking agent before being added to wood partilces. To improve adhesion between (I) and wood particles they are treated with a promoter, partic. soy bean soln. Esp. adhesion promoter and (I) are added to wood particles in mixer to form homogeneous, heat-pressable mixt. Peroxide is, e.g. butyl peroxide, crosslinking polyethylene at 125-180 deg.C or an encapsulated vinylsilane. Aq. soy bean soln., e.g. as 10% soln. in 20% maleic acid-cycloolefin-ammonia-water soln. or dissolved in water contg. small amt. of Ca(OH)2, not only improves adhesion but accelerates heat transfer and supplies water necessary for crosslinking when vinylsilane is used. The obtd. board contains no toxic substances.
