The invention relates to a device making it possible to check the authenticity of coins. The device essentially comprises a primary winding 20 linked to an alternating source 24, and two secondary windings 21, 22 preferably arranged on either side of a corridor through which the coin to be checked rolls. A differential circuit 28 has its two inputs linked respectively to the secondary windings by means of a balancing circuit 25-26 which is adjusted so that the differential circuit supplies a nil signal in the presence of an authentic coin. Application to prepayment machines, especially to dispensers of parking tickets. <IMAGE>
