The mechanism is intended for releasably connecting the ends (1a,2a) of work transfer gripper rails (1,2) in a transfer press in which, during tool chanqes, the respective press tool assembly is taken out together with its associated rail portion. The two ends have rectangular-section members (4), of which one contains an expandible assembly (6-8,13) which is axially movable into the other. At the end of this movement, the assembly expands to couple the two members together. This assembly is pref. arranged in the member whcih remains in situ during tool change.
