In order to provide a process for determining the sludge level in settling tanks of sewage-treatment works, by means of which it is made possible to use a very simple apparatus for carrying out the process, said apparatus determining the sludge level either independently or in conjunction with a process computer of the sewage treatment works, the invention proposes that a measuring body, the upper surface of which is of regular design, i.e. is designed with a known shape and size, be lowered continuously into the liquid, that a picture taken by a stationary camera of the measuring body be compared with the actual path covered by the measuring body, that a jump in the brightness reduction in the pictures taken by the camera indicates penetration of the measuring body into the settled sludge, and that the path covered by the measuring body from the liquid surface until its complete disappearance be a measure for the height of the liquid above the sludge level. The apparatus has, in a stationary sheath (1) which is closed at the top and open at the bottom, a measuring body (3), which can be moved vertically by means of a lowering device (6, 7, 8), a camera (2), a displacement sensor (11), a comparison photosensor (10) and a computer (9). <IMAGE>
