The document transport path is divided into individual monitoring stations (ÜP), input and output light barriers being allocated to each monitoring station, the document-related signal data (ED) of which light barriers are logically combined with the status data (ZD) of the respective monitoring station to form new status data (ZDN) or are evaluated to form specific error signals (FS). For all monitoring stations, common switching mechanisms (SW) are provided, the outputs of which are fed back to the inputs via active stores (ASP) which can be serially connected through. The status data (ZD) of the respective monitoring stations, contained in the active stores (ASP), together with the associated current light-barrier signal data (ED), are connected cyclically in the order of the arrangement of the monitoring stations to the switching mechanisms (SW) where they are logically combined with one another. <IMAGE>
