PURPOSE:To enable the elongation of the catalytic life in the manufacture of a carbon fiber using an acrylic fiber treated with silicone sizing agent as a precursor, by dividing the oxidizing process in two stages, burning the gas discharged from the first oxidation stage, and catalytically oxidizing only the gas discharged from the latter oxidation stage. CONSTITUTION:A carbon fiber is manufactured by subjecting the precursor composed of an acrylic fiber treated with a silicone sizing agent successively to the oxidation process comprising the heating of the fiber in an oxidizing atmosphere and to the carbonizing process comprising the heat-treatment of the fiber at high temperature in an inert atmosphere. In the above procedure, the oxidation process is divided into the former oxidation stage to heat in an oxidizing atmosphere at <=250 deg.C (preferably 220-245 deg.C) to attain a water-content of 1-3wt%, and the latter oxidation stage to heat in an oxidizing atmosphere (e.g. in air at 240-280 deg.C for 10-120min) to attain a water-content of at least 5wt%. At least a part of the gas discharged from the former oxidation stage is burnt and the gas discharged from the latter oxidation stage is oxidized by using a catalyst. |
