PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid-crystal display element having superior time-division characteristics by specifying the range of the product of the refractive index anisotropy and the thickness of liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:A thin polarizing film 2 is sandwiched between two transparent uniaxial oriented substrates 3 which have uniaxial orientation. The axis of absorption of the film 2 is made nearly parallel to the axis of drawing of the substrate 3. When 0.4<=DELTAn.d<=0.7 or when 0.9<=DELTAn.d<=1.2 where n is the refractive index anisotropy of liquid crystal and dmum is the thickness of the liquid crystal layer, the liquid-crystal display element with superior time-division characteristics is obtained without the generation of interference color. When DELTAn.d decreases below 0.4, brightness decreases because of deficiency in rotary power and when 0.7<=DELTAn.d<=0.9, interference color resulting from linear polarization is generated. |
