A device for setting and controlling a grinding machine, provision being made for a pneumatic cylinder for positioning the grinding unit in its working position as well as in its rest position to be provided for each grinding drum as well as each grinding shoe, and for pneumatic cylinders to be allocated also to the feeler beams, with which pneumatic cylinders the feeler beams can be both rigidly locked and freely mounted, a corresponding electric valve being allocated to each of these drive cylinders, which electric valve can be activated via an electric switching circuit in accordance with the chosen position of a selector switch.
