An azimuth sensor has a core (1) which is formed by rolling together a layer of a thin metallic strip produced by means of a fast tempering method. In particular, a thin strip of an amorphous cobalt-based magnetic alloy is used which has a magnetic high-frequency characteristic which is characterised by a coercive force Hc of less than 24 A/m. A primary coil (2) is wound essentially uniformly along a magnetic path of the core (1). A secondary coil (3) has two sub-coils (3a, 3b) which are at right-angles to one another and the diameter of which corresponds to an external diameter of the core (1). A magnetic flux is generated in the core (1) by exciting the primary coil (2), and the components of the magnetic flux on opposite sides of each sub-coil (3a, 3b) are influenced by the earth's magnetism in such a manner that a differential change by an amount which is used for detecting an azimuth occurs. <IMAGE>
