PURPOSE:To obtain a cam shaft which is powerful, robust and is lightweight in producing a titled cam shaft by an explosive pressure by specifying the compsn. of a pipe which is a blank material for cams, and hardening and shaping the formed surfaces for cams and bearings. CONSTITUTION:A high C steel contg. 0.35-0.58%C is used for a pipe 1 which is a blank material for cams. Said pipe is worked by an explosive pressure from the inside so that projecting surface 2 for cams and projecting surfaces 3 for bearings are bulged. The surfaces 2, 3 are then subjected to a high frequency hardening treatment to provide hardened layers 4, 4', the surfaces whereof are polished to shape surfaces 5, 5'. The surfaces 2, 3 formed in a similar way are hardened by carburizing, nitriding or boriding to provide layers 4, 4' which are then made into surfaces 5, 5', in the case of using a low C steel contg. 0.35-0.1%C as the pipe 1. |
