Hydrophobic adsorbants are made by pyrolysis of carbonaceous material, in the presence of air, and subsequent activation with chemicals or gas. The new feature is that a mixt. of mainly inorganic waste materials (A) and organic waste materials (B) is used. The process may be carried out directly with addn. of (B) to (A), then differential heat treatment in several stages. The first stage comprises heating up to 600 deg.C. over 1 hr., then coking, carried out at this temp. for up to 2 hr. The final stage (further coking-vitrification) comprises heating over 1 hr. to 900-1150 deg.C., then maintaining this temp. for up to 2 hr. Alternatively, an indirect method is used in which porous inorganic materials are impregnated with (B) then heated for 1 hr.; coked for up to 2 hr. at 600 deg.C., and finally extended at up to 1000 deg.C. for up to 2 hr.
