Thiadiazole oxides are provided of the formula <IMAGE> wherein; p is 1 or 2; R<x> and R<y> can be the same or different and can be R<7>, R<12> or -NH(CH2)nHS or NR<2>R<3>; R<7> is a leaving group; R<12> is A(CH2)mZ(CH2)nNH-, R<2>R<3>N- or HS(CH2)nNH-; R<2> and R<3> each are independently groups such as hydrogen and (lower)alkyl, m is 0 to 2; n is 2 to 4; Z and Z' each are independently sulfur, oxygen or methylene; A and A' each are independently groups such as phenyl, imidazolyl, or other heterocyclic groups. These compounds are useful as intermediates for pharmaceutically active compounds.
