A high-speed projectile 1 has a driving band 3 pressed into an annular groove 2 of trapezoidal section, the base 4 of the groove being a frustum of a cone having its apex directed towards the base of the projectile. The base 4 is provided with knurling comprising elevations 7 and depressions 27. Additional grooves of sawtooth shape in section may be formed to increase the support for the band 3. The band 3 is wider at its inner face than at the outer, and has the same cross-sectional shape as the groove 2. For a 2 cm. calibre projectile, the cone may have a semi-vertical angle of 10 degrees. The band may be made of sintered iron.</p> |
