An inorganic titanium coating, such as a hot end coating for glass containers, is applied to a glass surface by contacting the glass surface, which is at an elevated temperature, for example at least 371 DEG C., with a solution of a tetraalkyl titanate such as tetraisopropyl titanium, in a vehicle comprising a normally liquid ester of a fatty acid or a silicone fluid.
