Ionic 5-C-substituted 2,4,6-triiodo-isophthalic acid compounds of the general formula I (I) in which X represents -CONR1R2, -CH2NH?Acyl or -CH2OH; Y represents -NR3R4, -NH?Acyl or -OR5, R1, R2, R3 and R4 can be identical or different, and each is hydrogen, C1-6-alkyl or C2-8-alkyl substituted by 1-5 OH groups and/or by one C1-3-alkoxy group; R5 is C1-6-alkyl or C2-8-alkyl substituted by 1-5 OH groups and/or by one C1-3-alkoxy group; Acyl which can be the same or different in X and Y, is C2-6-alkanoyl or C2-6-alkanoyl substituted by 1-4 OH groups and/or by one C1-3-alkoxy group and physiologically tolerable salts thereof with inorganic and organic bases and a process for the manufacture of these compounds. The compounds of the general formula I and their salts are suitable for use as X-ray contrast agents and owing to their good general tolerability are especially suitable for use in urography and in computer tomography; they may accordingly be made up into X-ray contrast preparations with physiologically tolerable carriers.
