The apparatus comprises a grab having a stationary portion (1) and a movable portion controllable by hydraulic or mechanical means (2). The stationary grab portion (1) is fixed to the lower end of a rod or tube (5), the upper end of which is secured to a vibratory hammer (8). Control means (9) for the movable grab portion may be on the rod or tube or remote therefrom. In operation, the grab with open jaws is driven into the earth or rock by vibration. The jaws are then closed and contents scooped out of the ground. Sticky earth is removed from the jaws when emptied by vibration.
