In a new process for the prodn. of 3-phenyl-6-chloro-4 pyridazinyl thiocarbonates (I) by reacting salts of 3-phenyl-4-hydroxy-6-chloropyridazine (II) with alkyl thiochloroformates ClCOSR (III), alkali salts of (II) are used and the reaction is carried out in aq.-acetonic soln. at 5-60 deg.C then the denser aq. alkali chloride phase is sepd. off and the pure product is obtd. by evaporation of acetone from the organic phase (where R is opt. branched 1-18C alkyl). The products are known herbicides (cf. DE2331398). The process avoids the need for drying of starting materials and gives practically quantitative yields.
