Carrier tube (e.g. in cardboard) has its end secured to a plug in refractory material contg. a sampling chamber. The plug body forms part of the chamber boundary and has a radial inlet to the chamber whilst a reduced-diameter plug end is fixed in the tube and arranged such that the chamber is entirely outside the tube. The remainder of the chamber boundary is formed by at least one metal cooling plate. The plug is in a material which is gas-permeable, at least during immersion in the melt, and pref. consists of resin-bonded moulding sand. Used for taking samples of liq. metal from melt. The porosity of the plug ensures adequate gas dissipation into the melt to fill the chamber completely without gas inclusions, thus avoiding complicated arrangements to provide gas vents such as required for ceramic sampler plugs. The latter tend to cool the sample too rapidly to permit accurate measurement of the solidification temp. and are expensive (each sampler being used once only). The proposed arrangement permits fitting thermocouples and an oxygen measuring cell and prevents gas escaping into the tube which could damage the electric connections. All components can be assembled after moulding the plug.
|
