Drying is effected by storing the material in a heap and, when the presence of aerobic thermophilic microorganisms is detected, injecting air into the heap in an amt. sufficient to maintain controlled growth of the microorganisms and drive off water vapour. The heap may be 1-10 (pref. 2-4)m high. If necessary, the material may be inoculated with suitable microorganisms. At ambient temps. below 0 deg. C, the outer surface of the heap is pref. heated to prevent recondensation of moisture. The air (esp. compressed) may be injected through one or more ducts located beneath, within or around the heap, which may be enclosed by a roofed building. The treatment may be terminated when the moisture content reaches 12%. The process may be applied, e.g. to farmyard manure or waste materials from the foodstuffs or tanning industries, for prodn. of fuels, fertilisers, animal feeds, etc.
