PURPOSE:To improve the yield of the titled compound useful as a diol component of a wholly aromatic polyester in the reaction of hydroquinone with an alkylation agent in the presence of a phosphoric acid catalyst, by adding an alkyl-polysubstituted hydroquinone to the reaction system. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is prepared by adding an alkyl-polysubstituted hydroquinone to the system for the reaction of hydroquinone with an alkylation agent in the presence of a phosphoric acid catalyst, and contacting the components with each other preferably at 120-150 deg.C. The alkyl-polysubstituted hydroquinone is represented by the formula (n is 2-4; X is alkyl), and its amount is preferably 0.05-0.5pt.wt., especially 0.1-0.3pt.wt. per 1pt.wt. of hydroquinone. For practical purpose, it is preferably to mix the alkyl-polysubstituted hydroquinone with hydroquinone at the above ratio, add 3-5pts.wt. of the phosphoric acid catalyst to 1pt.wt. of the mixture, and add the alkylation agent thereto. |
