The device comprises a low-power laser 1 emitting an incident light beam 2 which passes through a hole 3 made in an inclined stationary mirror 4, is deflected by means of an oscillating mirror 5, reflected by a reflecting surface 6, deflected once again by the oscillating mirror 5 and returned back via the stationary mirror 4 to a photoelectric receiver 8. A signal-processing unit 18 is connected to the photoelectric receiver 8 and supplies an output signal when the light beam is totally occulted by a piece 13 disposed on the reflecting surface 6. The invention is particularly applicable to the production of devices enabling the minimum cut-length dimension of a piece of wood to be identified. <IMAGE>
