PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a solvent for paints, base for luburicating oil, etc. in high yield, by using a cation exchange resin catalyst having pore diameter and pore volume in specific ranges, polymerizing an alpha- alkylstyrene. CONSTITUTION:In preparing an unsaturated dimer of an alpha-alkylstyrene by polymerizing the alpha-alkylstyrene, a cation exchange resin (preferably highly porous type) having 10<2>-10<3> Angstrom pore diameter and 0.05-0.30ml/g pore volume is used. The amount of catalyst used is preferably 0.1-5wt% based on the raw material, and the reaction is preferably carried out at 60-150 deg.C. USE:An intermediate for a liquid having a high coefficient of transmission. |
