摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To prevent malfunctioning of an apparatus for controlling the valve timing by the rotation of a step motor, by setting the valve timing at a fixed value on the delay side when the battery voltage is low. CONSTITUTION:An inner sleeve 36 on the side of a cam shaft 18 and an outer sleeve 38 on the side of a timing pulley 28 are respectively formed with slits 40, 42, and the valve timing is controlled by moving roller bearings 44, 46 in the slits 40, 42 by a step motor 50. Signals relating to the pressure in an intake pipe, the water temperature and the engine speed are applied to a control circuit for the step motor 50, and the valve timing is controlled to render the actually measured value equal to an aimed value stored in memory of the control circuit. When the battery voltage is low, the above control is not executed and the valve timing is set at a fixed value on the delay side. By thus preventing malfunctioning of the control apparatus, it is enabled to prevent degradation of the engine performance.</p>
