The driven elements of the weaving machine are driven from a main shaft (19) which is coupled constantly to the drive motor (3). A braking device (11, 12, 15) is attached to the drive motor (3) in such a way that the braking force acts on the motor shaft (5). Also provided is an electrical switching arrangement which has a first circuit for operating the drive motor at normal rotational speed and a second circuit for operating the drive motor at a limited low starting speed as a result of the intermittent transmission of a limited current.
