<p>The forage harvester comprises a pick up (16) driven so that the collected crop is carried upwardly and rearwardly over the horizontal pick up axis (24), the pick up and a hood (18) extending over it cooperating to effect a degree of separation between the crop and stones by concentrating the stones in a peripheral path around the inside of the hood. A deflector (19) is provided for deflecting stones clear of the intake of the chopping apparatus (14), for processing crop coming from the pick up. The pick up may be a flail mower rotor having radially outwardly extending cutting elements.</p>
