Electronic device for measuring the distance between motor vehicles for use with passenger cars, lorries and other motor vehicles. The system detects obstacles ahead of motor vehicles which are driving forwards by means of ultrasonic sensors which are attached to the front side of the vehicle and have a sensing range which is proportional to the speed at which the vehicle is travelling. When obstacles are detected, different distance-dependent flashing signals and different audible signals are output at the dashboard. If the distance falls below the minimum distance which has been programmed in, automatic braking of the vehicle takes place.
