The measuring instrument contains a retaining device for retaining and rotating the workpiece about an axis of rotation. Gripping the circumference of the workpiece is a feeler which serves to measure the external distance of the circumference of the workpiece from the axis of rotation (A0). Furthermore, there is arranged on the feeler an ultrasonic testing head (16) which serves to measure the thickness of the wall of the workpiece. An evaluation device uses the external distance and the thickness of the wall to determine the internal distance of the inner surface of the cavity from the axis of rotation. The measuring instrument is used, in particular, in an aligning press which serves to align the workpiece depending on the position of the cavity, in order to bring the axis of the cavity into agreement with the axis of rotation of the workpiece.
