A transfer device for advancing essentially flat work pieces through a succession of pressing stations of a transfer press comprises two transfer bars which extend parallel to one another at a distance from one another and, for the purpose of grasping, lifting and advancing the successive work pieces from one pressing station to the next, can be moved backwards and forwards in the longitudinal direction as well as upwards and downwards and towards and away from one another. When grasping the work pieces, the transfer bars are moved towards one another with the aid of a rack and pinion drive. To adapt the minimum spacing of the transfer bars to different widths of work piece to be grasped, a tandem cylinder arrangement (86) comprising at least two fluid-actuated cylinders (92, 94) is provided between a cam mechanism driving the rack and pinion drive and the rack of the said drive. At least one cylinder (92, 94) has two pistons (100, 102) movable independently of one another, the cylinder arrangement thus comprising overall at least three pistons (100, 102, 114). The travels of the individual pistons are preferably different from one another. By selective pressurisation of the fluid chambers (104, 106, 108, 110, 116, 118) bounded by the pistons, numerous combinations of piston positions can be set, allowing the total length of the cylinder arrangement (86) and hence the minimum spacing of the transfer bars to be...in a simple manner in small steps ...
