The present invention relates to a method for smoothing and further working the sand bed under interlocking blocks which have been laid and to an apparatus for carrying out the method. According to the method of the invention, in a paving of interlocking blocks, the lateral edge or, at a predetermined spacing, an interspace is paved using individual blocks which upon further working of the sand bed are initially removed and allow a smoothing and consolidating apparatus to be inserted under the interlocking blocks and guided along the sand bed to be smoothed. The smoothing and consolidating apparatus possesses guides for transportation, a supporting cover over which the laid interlocking blocks slide, a sand-introducing and distributing device and a striking-off and/or compacting arrangement. <IMAGE>
