It is particularly in the case of ultrasonic echo signals, which were obtained by means of a sector scan process and must be temporarily stored for being displayed in accordance with a television standard, that the problem exists that the echo information provided as vectors in a scan direction must be transferred in a suitable manner into cartesian memory matrixes. In this connection, it is appropriate to carry out a data reduction for the purpose of digital storage. According to the invention, all data acquired from the signal information are then temporarily stored in a vector memory, and from the vector memory the data are transferred into a cartesian memory matrix, the required data reduction only being carried out when the information is transferred into the memory matrix. <IMAGE>
