A manually operated shift device for gearboxes of motor vehicles, especially of tractors which can be used in agriculture and/or the construction industry is described, in which a shaft 7 for engaging the gears can be swivelled by the manual shift lever 1 and is longitudinally displaceable for the selection of one of two selector plate slots by a member. In order to be able to design the gate, in which the manual shift lever 1 is guided, as simply as possible, only the swivelling of the gear shift shaft 7 (engagement and disengagement of gears) is assigned to the manual shift lever 1, whilst for longitudinal displacement of the gear shift shaft 7 (engagement of the selector plate slot), the selector member, a lifting magnet 13, is provided. The lifting magnet 13 actuatable by way of a control element arranged on the manual shift lever 1, at the same time acts directly on the gear shift shaft 7. So that the longitudinal movement of the gear shift shaft 7 is not imparted to the manual shift lever 1, a component is arranged in the transmission linkage between manual shift lever 1 and gear shift shaft 7 so that it can absorb the movement of the gear shift shaft 7 but without transmitting it further.
