Method for determining the vertical deviation with respect to a reference point of a body moving virtually linearly by making use of a sensor which is aligned with the reference point, detects the moving body and has an associated optical system, in particular an IR sensor, and an evaluation device downstream of the sensor. Use is made of a sensor having a detector row arranged in the Y-direction of the X-Y plane above the reference point, or of a sensor having two parallel detector rows situated in the Y-direction of the X-Y plane. The detector rows employ measurement technology to detect the passage, entry or exit of the observed flight path (trajectory) of the body through the image of the scene which surrounds the detector rows and is projected onto the detector plane. The vertical deviation of the flight path of the body relative to the reference point, and if necessary the speed of the body, is determined as a function of the arrangement of the detectors of the detector rows, of their prescribed dimensions, of the geometry of the sensor relative to the moving body, and of the focal length of the optical system of the sensor. <IMAGE>
