An arc-extinguishing chamber comprises an extinguishing- or cooling-plate arrangement (56, 14) which is dedicated to the contact point (26, 28; 48, 50) of a switch (10, 14), a switching arc, produced at the contact point, passing into this arrangement, where it is cooled and extinguished. To improve the extinguishing or cooling properties, each plate (14, 56) is coated, at least on one side and at least in part, with a material which gives off gas or vapour and which, under the influence of the arc, evaporates and affects the arc. In this arrangement, a coating-free area (66, 68, 70) is advantageously left free. The material used can be zinc or an insulating material. If zinc is used, the optimum solution is to coat only a subregion (72) situated downstream. <IMAGE>
