In the method of feeding and collecting storage containers in racks, at least one store crane with a crane bridge and a lifting appliance as well as at least one chain-type or belt-type conveying unit are provided. The store crane (11) is moved up to the intended location at the rack (1), the lifting platform (14) is lowered, the full container (6a) is loaded onto this platform (14) by means of telescopic forks of the lifting platform (14) and is then taken up with the latter. The store crane (14) then travels into its end unloading position and in the process takes the container (6a) into a first deposit space (16) of the crane bridge (12). After this the container (6a) is put down in the deposit space (16) and the lifting platform (14) moves up to clear the unloading opening of the bridge (12). The lifting appliance (13) provided with a return container (6b) then travels upwards and lifts the full container (6a). After this the crane bridge (12), augmented by one container width, is moved by the clearance between between the two containers (6a, 6b), and the lifting appliance (13) is lowered in order to deposit the return container (6b) in the second deposit space (16a) and travel downwards with the full container (6a). In the course of rationalisation, it is attempted, in the field of stock-keeping and collection, to reduce the collection and return movements of storage containers to a minimum. <IMAGE>
