In order to increase the dimensional accuracy or measuring accuracy of electronic distance measuring devices which display the distance a of, e.g., two rotating cutting discs, automatic readjustment to an arbitrarily selected reference point is undertaken. This readjustement is effected by, e.g., an operating cam with a microswitch or the like. At a defined cutting disc distance a as reference point, a highly accurate control pulse is triggered which is fed to an electronic control input of the counter and then triggers a preprogrammed circuit which sets (calibrates) the digital display to the value of the distance a. Possible measurement errors and/or inaccuracies are thereby continuously eliminated automatically.
