The arrangement is intended to damp the vibrations of a longitudinal, flexible, cutting tool such as a bandsaw blade(23). This is effected by intermittently varying the length and the tension of the saw blade. The endless saw blade, which runs around pulleys(19,21), may have a periphery of at least one of the pulleys provided with grooves(39) extending in an axial direction, pref. parallel to the axis of the pulley. The grooves may be equally spaced(P) or unequally spaced. The blade may, alternatively, have its modulus of elasticity or its tensile strength periodically varying along its length. The blade tension may be periodically varied by varying the distance bewteen the pulleys.
