1-Isopropylamino- 3-aryloxy-2-propanol cpds. of formula ArOCH2CH(OH)CH2NHCH(CH3)2 (I) in which Ar = substd. aromatic residue are prepd. by reacting an epoxy cpd. (II) with a phenolic cpd. ArOH (III) to give the cpd. (IV), and subsequently removing the benzhydryl gp.: The reaction between (II) and (III) is pref. carried out in the presence of an alkaline catalyst such as Na or K butoxide, in DMAC at ca. 130 deg.C under N2. The intermediate cpd. 3-(N-isopropyl-N -benzhydrylamino)- 1,2-epoxypropane (II) is new.
