A fluid transfer device (10) includes a meltable body (14) having an axial bore (16) and a generally constant cross section along the entire axial length of the bore. A radiant energy absorbing area (30) is formed on the body. In response to the application of radiant energy, the area melts to form an opening (41) in the body which extends radially into the bore. One of the devices may be used to form a removable seal for a fluid source. Two of the devices may be coupled together with the associated radiant energy absorbing areas in facing contact. By focusing radiant energy upon the facing areas, a fluid path between the coupled devices can be formed. Repeated connections can be made utilizing the same pair of devices, which become successively shorter in overall length, and hence more compact, after each connection.
|
