PURPOSE:To improve product purity and to economize energy consumption by mounting a cation exchange membrane to a finger type electrolytic cell, and forming a gas-liquid boundary for separating the gaseous chlorine generated in an anode upper than the gas-liquid boundary in a cathode chamber. CONSTITUTION:An electrolytic cell consists of expandable metallic anodes 3 implanted to a bottom plate 12, finger-shaped cathodes 2 provided perpendicularly in a parallel array and cation exchange membranes 4 mounted between the cathodes 2 and the anodes 3. An aq. sodium chloride soln. supplied into the electrolytic cell is electrolyzed by the anodes 3 to form lean salt water. The gaseous chlorine generated at the same instant arrives at the gas-liquid boundary A in the upper part of an anode chamber 17 and is subjected to a gas-liquid sepn. On the other hand, the dilute aq. caustic soda soln. introduced into a cathode chamber 18 is electrolyzed by the cathodes 2 and hydrogen is generated. The generated hydrogen arrives at the gas-liquid boundary B of the level lower than the above-described boundary in the upper part of the chamber 18 and is subjected to a gas-liquid sepn. |
