PURPOSE:To prepare an unsaturated alcohol in high yield and selectivity, by hydrogenating an unsaturated aldehyde, an unsaturated fatty acid or its ester under pressure in the presence of a catalyst composition containing specific amounts of iron oxide, zinc oxide and zirconium oxide. CONSTITUTION:An unsaturated alcohol is prepared economically by hydrogenating an unsaturated aldehyde, an unsaturated fatty acid or its ester under a hydrogen pressure of 150-300kg/cm<2> preferably at 250-350 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst composition composed of 100pts.wt. of iron oxide, 4-25pts.wt. of zinc oxide and 1-60pts.wt., preferably 4-30pts.wt. of zirconium oxide. The amount of the catalyst is preferably 5-30wt%, based on the raw material. The catalyst may be incorporated with the fourth component provided that the original catalytic activity is maintained. |
