A process is described for the recovery of chlorine from chlorine-containing off-gases (exhaust gases, waste gases) which comprises, first of all, passing these into alkali metal hydroxide to prepare, in a conventional manner, a bleaching liquor of defined ClO<-> concentrations, which is then reacted with concentrated hydrochloric acid in continuous flow in a packed column (packed trickle column) while maintaining a pH of from 2 to 5. The chlorate present in the bleaching liquor is not decomposed under these conditions, so that the chlorine escaping at the column head is free of chlorine dioxide.
