A rotary joint for use in multichannel fiberoptic data transfer systems provides means to couple data between a set of stationary fiberoptic filaments and a second set of fiberoptic filaments rotating about a central axis. Data from one set of filaments are converted by collimating lenses (1, 3, 5; 1 min , 3 min , 5 min ) into beams of light corresponding to the data being transmitted through each filament. The light beams are passed through a de-rotating prism (51) and directed onto individual lenses coupled to the filaments in the second set. The de-rotator typically consists of a Delta prism (51) which is rotated at half the speed of the rotating set of filaments. Since the optical pattern in such a prism rotates at twice the speed of rotation of the prism, the pattern of beams applied to the second set of filaments retains a fixed relationship with respect to these filaments and coupling is maintained regardless of the relative rotation of the two sets of fiberoptic filaments.
|
